Server hostname

Permissions Note

This tool is only available to the Master Organisation.

A server hostname is a management tool much like a 'friendly name' that allows you to connect to a server within your cluster without having to remember the IP address. It can also be used by your customers to connect to incoming/outgoing email in place of mail.customerdomain.com if the DNS for that domain is not yet pointed.

Each server within an LxRoot cluster can have a server hostname. When installing a new server, you will be prompted to add one, though it is not required and can be added at a later date.

Recommendations & Constraints

A recommended server hostname is {server_name}.{brand_domain}, however, it can be any domain of your choosing. Consider the following:

  • A server hostname must be unique to each server.
  • A server hostname cannot also be added to the platform as a website.

Once a server hostname is set, a corresponding SHN website will be added to your cluster and will appear in your Websites listing.

To set a server hostname on an existing server:

  1. Open Servers in the left sidebar.
  2. Locate the server you would like to add a server hostname to.
  3. Select Manage in the drop down menu.
  4. In the top right hand menu of the server management page select Server hostname.
  5. Enter your chosen server hostname in the Domain field.
  6. Click Add to finish.
DNS Configuration

If you are using LxRoot for DNS, the records for this domain will automatically be added to the zone. If you are using an external DNS provider, you will need to manually add the records with that provider.
